TAKING CLASSES WITH JAN O'DONOGHUE
What is it really like?

"What am I in for?" you wonder when you've decided
to take the plunge and begin yoga classes with Jan. Or you may have some
experience of other yoga styles and wonder, "So what is different about
Iyengar yoga?"
Here then is a little information to help you prepare. My aim is to teach
you how to do yoga that is beneficial to your particular body and
enhances your particular lifestyle. After all, you live in
your body, no-one else's, and your life situation is uniquely yours.
This means that in class you will be closely watched. You will be corrected,
adjusted and reminded as often as necessary so that you advance steadily,
safely and confidently. You will need to engage your full attention and not
allow your mind to wander. I am often moving among students to assist each
person and to demonstrate up close so you can see exactly how the pose is done.
You will be taught what to do to relieve discomfort in any pose and what to do
to shift that discomfort forever. You will be taught how to use props to
accelerate your progress and help you to understand how to achieve the beauty
of correct and free movement. Where necessary special remedial sequences can be
given to help you overcome specific problems and you will learn that you no
longer have to say, "I can't do it". You will have the solution. You will be
questioned and listened to, enlivened when you are lazy and restrained when you
are overly ambitious with your body.
Though it is easier to join in classes at the beginning of a term this is not
essential. You will gradually pick up if you commit to regular attendance. I am
constantly revising and consolidating, as well as adding in new techniques and
new poses. This allows you to progress steadily throughout the year. In the
space of even one term you will see significant improvement. All in all you are
in for a great learning experience; an experience studying that most
fascinating subject of all; Your Self.
Iyengar Yoga Postures:
Unlike general hatha yoga, the postures (exercises) taught in the Iyengar
system are not open to interpretation by the teacher. Their correct method of
performance is set by Mr. Iyengar. This gives clarity and surety to the
students and means that a student can study with an accredited Iyengar teacher
anywhere in the world and continue with exactly the same poses and the same
syllabus as at home.
Though Iyengar teachers differ in their personalities and years of experience,
all will insist on precision and attentiveness and all follow the guidelines
set forth by the Iyengar Institute. You can expect an Iyengar class to
often be dynamic and challenging. This work gives you stamina,
internal cleansing and a well-toned flexible body. It sharpens your wits, hones
your powers of observance and discrimination and vastly improves your ability
to concentrate. Other times Restorative poses are given .
These poses re-energize you. They are soothing to the nervous system and deeply
restful. They are an enjoyable and essential counter- balance to the dynamic
poses and an anti-dote for a hectic life-style.
YOUR EXCUSES:
You are not too old!
Ages of present students range from pre-teens to eighties. Adaptations
are given as necessary. The correctly aligned posture takes care of the person,
regardless of age.
You are not too stiff! In fact the stiffer you are
or the more unfit or over-weight you perceive yourself to be the more you need
to get started on your own yoga program.
Haven't got time?
The busier you are the more you need the balance of yoga in your life.
The bonus is, More Life.
